Privacy Policy
Effective: 14 May 2026 · Last updated 28 September 2026
Updated 2026-09-28: deleting your account now also deletes your AI usage counters and removes your account ID and email address from feedback and reports you sent. Updated 2026-09-25: clarified that anonymous scan history is stored on our servers and that label photos go to our AI service. Updated 2026-09-22: named the operator; added the photo and Open Food Facts lines.
ClearEaty is operated by Patroventure LLC, a New Jersey limited liability company (“we”, “us”). We build a mobile app and companion website that help you understand the ingredients in packaged foods. This page explains what we collect, why, and how to delete it.
What we collect
Anonymous ID. When you first open the app, our sign-in service (Firebase Authentication) creates a random anonymous ID for this install, so you can use ClearEaty without an account. Your scan history is stored on our servers under that ID. If the app is reinstalled or its data is cleared, a new ID is created and the earlier history is no longer reachable from the app.
Account details (only if you sign in). If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your email address and display name (and, from Google, a profile photo URL) to recognise you across devices and persist your scan history. With Sign in with Apple you may choose to hide your email, in which case we only ever see Apple’s private relay address. You can sign out or delete your account at any time (see Your choices below).
Scan data. For each product you scan we store the barcode (if any), product name, ingredient list, AI-generated ingredient scores, the overall health score, and the timestamp.
Feedback and product reports. If you send feedback or report a problem with a product, we store what you wrote (and, for a pack photo, the ingredient list read from it) with your account ID, your app version, and the email address if you chose to give one.
AI usage counters. We count how many AI requests each account makes per day, only to stop abuse.
Crash logs and diagnostics. If the app crashes or misbehaves, Firebase Crashlytics records a crash report — the error and stack trace, plus basic device and app information (device model, OS version, app version). We use this only to find and fix bugs.
What we do not collect
- We don’t collect your location.
- We don’t track you across other apps or websites.
- We don’t collect health information, dietary preferences, or anything you haven’t scanned.
- We don’t use third-party advertising SDKs and we don’t track you for marketing.
Third-party services we send data to
- Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore database, Crashlytics). Hosts your account and scan data and collects crash reports. Subject to Google’s privacy policy.
- Apple (Sign in with Apple). If you sign in with Apple, Apple provides a unique identifier and, unless you hide it, your name and email. Subject to Apple’s privacy policy.
- Anthropic Claude API (through our own server). We send only what is needed to read and score a product: the ingredient text, the label photo when you use label scan, or the food name you type for an AI estimate. Your account, email and location are never included.
- Open Food Facts (open-data product database). When you scan a barcode we look it up against their public API. Only the barcode is transmitted.
- Product data and most photos from Open Food Facts — data ODbL, photos CC-BY-SA.
The public catalogue
To save AI cost and improve speed, scanned products and their ingredient scores are stored in a shared catalogue that all ClearEaty users read from. This catalogue contains product-level information only — barcode, product name, ingredients, and score — never anything tied to who scanned it.
Photos you add. Photos you add to a product are stored and shown publicly with that product — in the app and on cleareaty.com. Email mahesh@patroventure.com to have one removed. The app asks for your agreement before the camera opens for a contributed photo.
Label photos. A label photo is sent to our AI service only to read the label; it is processed and discarded, not stored. Barcode scanning saves no image.
How long we keep it
Personal scan history is kept while your account exists. Public catalogue entries are kept indefinitely so other users benefit from past scans. Anonymous device IDs are pruned if there has been no activity for 24 months.
Your choices
- Sign out. Tap your account icon → Sign out. Your scan history stays on the server under your account; signing back in restores it.
- Delete your account & data. In the app, tap your account icon → Delete account → confirm. This permanently deletes your account and personal scan history right away. You can also request deletion here. Your AI usage counters are deleted too. Feedback and product reports you sent from that account are kept, but we remove your account ID and email address from them; the text you typed stays as you wrote it. Public catalogue entries (which contain no link to you) are not affected.
- Revoke Google access. Visit myaccount.google.com/permissions and remove ClearEaty.
Children
ClearEaty is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone in that age group.
International users
Data is stored on Google Cloud servers, primarily in the United States. If you are in the EU/UK, your scan data may be processed outside your home jurisdiction. By using ClearEaty you consent to this transfer.
Changes to this policy
If we change anything material, we will update the effective date above. Continued use of the app means you accept the updated policy.
